The Color of Christmas

Next month, the day everyone look forward to will come. That’s Christmas! In recent days, you can see Christmas trees at shopping malls or Christmas decorations in the show windows. By the way, what colors do you imagine when you hear the word, “Christmas”? You may think of red of Santa Claus or green of Christmas tree. The traditional colors of Christmas are green, red, white, gold and silver. Did you know that each color has special meanings? In Christian tradition, these colors take on special meanings:

Red - Christ's blood shed for our sin on the cross
Green - Eternal life in Christ

White - The purity of Christ, The color of snow
Gold - Christ the Divine, the star over Bethlehem
Silver - Redemption in Christ
Before Christmas will come, if you decorate your room with these color ornaments, you can enjoy happy Christmas mood!

Favorite Comics

What comics do you like? I have a recommendation for all students of KUIS. Its name is “Makuhari Saboten Campus”. It is a four-frame comic and it depicts mainly on lives of university students interestingly.

The main character, Asuka, is said to be a "Saboten (cactus) girl" because she is a sluggard. Other characters are also individual and really funny. The comic draws process of four main characters’ entering the university, being promoted, graduating, finding a job, and marrying. When you read the part of the scene that depicts friendship and growth of characters, you will feel
sympathy to them. Furthermore, many attractions in Chiba appear so you can learn local information around here.

The aerial university is located in Makuhari, and it is said that the model is this Kanda University. So I think we KUIS people can enjoy this comic more than other people. Please try during you are in KUIS!

Are you busy?

Are you busy? I know Kanda students are very busy everyday with homework, presentations, studies, and activities. Me, too!!!!! I am also pushed for time. So, why don't you reward yourself after finishing your tasks? I sometimes do that to refresh myself.

For example, I go shopping and try to buy something a bit expensive, or I have a good time with good friends to my heart's content. Traveling is also a good way to refresh. Next week is a chance to do something you like. Have a good short holiday, and let's enjoy the rest of this semester!

My sister is with a new friend.

Since we were kids, my sister has done things nobody ever expected. The other day, I was heading to home, she did something. Instead of going home, I visited my sister’s place. She has just started to live by herself in a city, Takasaki, located in Gunma prefecture because our house is far from her office and she would like to live in an urban area. The first time I heard she moved out our home, I was not comfortable because I couldn’t imagine her life without any support by the family.

Although I had called her to pick me up while I was on the train, she was not at the station when I arrived there. Since I already knew that her boss asks her to do some overtime, I was not worried so much. However, I was getting really worried because she didn’t call me back for an hour. Bad thoughts came into my head, such as a car accident, or much worse things.

2 hours had passed since I arrived at the station, she finally showed up with a big smile. I wanted to be mad at her, but I didn’t because she was with a pretty friend. Surprisingly, she came to the station with a doggy!! Actually, when we were little, we couldn’t have any animals because we lived in a small flat. My sister used to ask me “what would we do if our mom let us own a dog? That would be amazing, wouldn’t’ it? ” She must have wanted to make me surprised, so she just had got a dog. Anyway, I didn’t blame her for being 2 hours late because of her new friend.

Good evening at KUIS

In these days, do you feel cool or cold? I can see many students wear much clothing because of the weather.

In some classes, there may be many students have cold. And in this year I heard the cold is very strong, so we can’t recover soon and it takes about 1month. I was so surprised.

However, cause of getting cold, it has good point. On 13 November, I saw the setting sun!!

It’s veeeeeerrrry beautiful so that I took pictures quickly.

In KUIS, we have a lot of homework and assignment everyday and every week. There must be people depressed or want to escape from studies and works. But before escaping, look at the clear sky. Especially I recommend that you should see it with sitting on the ground at KUIS!!

Take a big breath!! It must make your feeling refresh so much!!

Thanksgiving

American expressed to Native American their gratitude in the past. However, now, they don't do that. They celebrate their health in the day. Some children dress up as Indians. Even animals dress up to celebrate!

If there is one landmine in KUIS, what do you think?

What do you think about question? Do you think you are safe in KUIS? Do you feel frighten to walk in school? I feel frighten to walk around in school. In Eigo Sogo class, Mr. Kirk Johnson is teaching “global issue” which I am taking now and we did landmine issue in class, and also there was one room future about landmine issue in Hamakaze-festival.

In Hamakaze-festival, the volunteer member gathered and made presentation room at building 4. There were lots of pictures of landmine victims, showed the model of landmines, and message cards to countries where has not signed landmine ban treaty. There is the question, where is the area landmine buried? Or what is the landmine? Landmines are buried in the ground, and explode whoever steps on it. There is lot of types of landmines, some has wire to hook to leg, some are flying up to explode that people hurt hand or face. Another type is targeting of children that landmine’s shape is like a toy. There is also landmine targeting to explode tanks. The area is spread all over the world, Asia, Africa, Latin-America, even in Europe has the area polluted by landmines. In Hamakaze-festival’s landmine issue room, there is a poster to write massages, and there were lots of massages many people wrote about. The most impressed massage was “war was over, how many times we said this word?” This word made me thinking about why there is still many fear and anger in this world.
I asked to Mr. Johnson couple questions. I will write his words in below (I will write summary of what he answered).
* Why you were interested in this issue?
“After I started teaching this issue, I was sure that most students give the opportunity would feel same way and would want to learn more about landmine issues”
* Do you think that we have to go to a landmine field to think more about landmine? Or do you think that we can study in Japan though media?
“It is not possible or practical to go to landmine field. Study in Japan is the reality for most of us just like any issue in the world: poverty, HIV in Africa, sweatshop labor, and so on. If you are interested in landmine issue, get information from various anti-landmine groups that have websites”
* What we can do to improve landmine issue problem?
“First, learn about the problem. Then spread the word though the media, to your friend, get your mate together for an information campaign and talk to another friend to resonance your thought of landmine. The last one is a highly successful idea used by the group, Adopt-A-Minefield. This action is exciting and gives you a chance to make new friend on all over the world. Whatever you do is truly up to you”

As my opinion, landmine is the worst weapon in the world. It explode whoever steps on, even he/she was not soldier. Many people who lives nearby landmine polluted area want to live in peace, without fear of landmines. It is important issue to think about, that is not alienation problem to all of the human beings. Many famous people are also working on resolving landmine issue, for example, Diana, Princess of Wales worked to it. There is a foundation of Diana; the donations goes to activities Diana has done, include remove landmine, provision of HIV/AIDS and so on. We can do something to improve landmine situation as Mr. Johnson told us, or you can find your original support to it. As one of the student of university of international studies, I want to involve in those action. If you feel something about landmine issue by reading this article, I will be pleased.

Have you ever been to take lecture at Millennium House??

All of Kanda student know about Millennium House, but most of them do not use there I think. Sometimes you can take lectures at Millennium House. For example, you can learn about AIDS, Islam, or some International problem. These information advertise around the university. You can see a lot of poster. If you find these poster, you should go Millennium House to increase your knowledge for your future.

On November 9, one movie played. Did you see? That movie was about “Memories of Edward Said.” Edward Said was born in 1935. He was Palestine but he grew up in Egypt and he became critic of literature. He wrote famous book, “Orientalism.” On the other hand, he worked for peace between Palestine and Israel. He is very famous in Japan or America. He is a great person.

Precisely, do you know the problem of Palestine and Israel? It is very complicated. The conflict began to form around the beginning of the 20th century. Actually, I did not know about this problem. However, I am interested in world problem because these days, a lot of conflict occurred somewhere in the world. I have class about international peace. During that class, teacher said that Japan is safe so most people do not know about conflict and we think peace is usual, we should think that what is peace?? Before I take this class, I also did not know and I had thought that It is not relate to me, but now I start to think about peace.

After, I saw this movie, I think that it is very complicated and I cannot understand everything. I cannnot imagine their life even if I had seen a movie. Japanese may sumptuous. If we have some money, we can go everywhere I want, we can wear good clothes, we can eat everything I want… However, people who live in trouble spot do not know peace world and everyday is life-in-death problem. We are students of Kanda. We can learn not only language but also world history or international problem, so we should make use of these lecture or movie. Next time, let’s go to Millennium House with your friends.

Advanced Tenugui

For a long time ago, one of my close friends gave me this tenugui as a souvenior.

This gave me a big impact at first sight.
When I was a elementary school student, I was used to dance the Yagi-bushi which was traditional dance in the north Kanto area. Every field day in my elementary school, all student had danced the Yagi-bushi with tenugui.

After getting this tenugui, my idea for tenugui has changed a little.Tenugui can be used for not only dancing but also dressing up as a Japanese traditional dancer. I am sure that this tenugui can make anyone happy and joyful.

The Tokyo Metro Tozai Line

The Tokyo Metro Tozai Line is a subway line. Part of the Tokyo Metro system, it connects Nakano station in Nakano Ward, Tokyo, Japan and Nishi Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture.

Facts
  • Length : 30.8 km
  • Number of stations : 23
  • Underground segment : Nakano Station-Minami Sunamachi Station
Women-only cars, designed to prevent chikan, will be introduced on this line during morning rush hours starting on November 20, 2006. The reason why I introduce The Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, I use this line to go to KANDA university. My nearest station is Barakinakayama station which is next to Nishi Funabashi Station. I like Tozai Line because train cars are clean different from Ginza line or other Metoro lines. Moreover train fare is more reasonable than JR’s one. For example, If I use JR line to go to Shibuya, it costs 610 yen. However, If I use Tozai line it costs 270 yen!!! How kind to me and people who don't have much money like students. If you have a chance to use Tozai line, please use it. It will give you a comfortable trip of train.

SPECIAL DAYS

SPECIAL DAYS
Hamakaze festival was held on October 27th and 28th at Kanda University. Did you go there? or did you sell some foods?? This year, the scale was the biggest, so many groups sell sweets, drinks or foods and some groups published their band, dance or pictures. Also many guests came to Hamakaze festival. 2 years ago and last year, the weather was bad and cold, so sometimes some stages were canceled and they could not sell cold drink. However, this year, the weather was really good. It was sunny and hot. Most people could wear T-shirts or half-pants. That weather makes all people in Hamakaze happy.
Now, I introduce some groups. In Hamakaze, there is competition system. It means, the guest who is not student in Kanda can vote for one group that they think the best. The best team can get travel coupon!! The vote consist of 4 parts. Stage, Food, Exhibition, Costume. Firstly, the champion of Stage was the band of teacher Usui. He played guitar, and vocal. He is like a real singer. He did not look like a teacher. Teacher Kurosaki also played key board. It was great!! Secondly, the champion of food was foreign student. They sold “suigyouza” and “tijimi.” I did not eat their foods but my friend said that it was delicious. Thirdly, the champion of exhibition was KUIS goods. They sold sticker, clutch bag or hand towel. Actually, I belong to this group, so I think very happy. Lastly, the champion of costume was flamenco. Their dress was beautiful and their make was cool. I interviewed one person who watched their dance. She said, “it was very very nice. Their dance was perfect. It makes me happy. Especially, I was impressed by senior students dance.”
I think Hamakaze festival was successful. Most people must be spend special time. Many students worked hard for Hamakaze for a long time and they enjoyed. Hamakaze makes all student pleasure. I hope next year more people will take part in Hamakaze festival!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Institute for Growing Young Experts

The Graduate School of Language Science at Kanda University of International Studies was founded in April, 1992. It has professors with excellent research results and teaching experience, as well as modern research facilities. There are private research rooms for each person. Also there is a browsing room and a computer room for graduate school students only.

The purpose of this school is to make international contributions to many fields of modern language study and to foster excellent young researchers. In the graduate school, continuing education is emphasized. In order to create a curriculum to provide a schedule to foster experts, all lessons are given from the afternoon to the evening. These times enable adult students to take lessons at night and to cope with both jobs and schoolwork.

The feature of the Master’s program is that many choices are available which are compatible with the student’s interests and backgrounds. Since 1998, a new system was started to meet needs in various fields which students majored in. Accordingly, students can register various classes and get a master’s degree by writing a research report instead of a master’s thesis. Students can specialize in a major field by acquiring special skills or knowledge.

“OWARAI”

Have you ever been to “Owarai live”?
Today, “Owarai” is a one of the big boom among the people. On October 29th at Hamakaze festival, very famous comedian, up down, galleage sale and Hosei Yamazaki visited to KUIS to perform comedy. It is a first time to visit a celebrity to KUIS at Hamakaze festival.

Many students were looking forward to see them. At the closing event, Ko-yasai, many KUIS students crowded into a gym and some foreign students and teachers also gathered there to watch their show. A great cheer went up from the crowd when comedians appeared on the stage. The show was really exciting and it was always full of laughter and smile. Their performance was easy to understand and made us fun. Some lucky students got presents like autograph and took a picture with them.

I’m sure that all of audience had a great time and it must be one of the happy memories for us. I also felt that smiling and laughing make us happy. Are you smiling everyday? Smiling make you happy and your smile make people around you happy. Be smile every day!!

Halloween in the SALC

On October 31st the decoration of SALC was changed to adjust the Halloween. Almost all the KUIS students might use SALC, and sometimes we noticed the changing of decorations. There are not only many good facilities for study but also many good decorations. ELI decorations change many times to adjust the seasons in the year. There are unique decorations, for example, in last winter, there is a big snowman at in front of the yellow sofa, and in this Halloween there is a feigned pumpkin at the front desk and some feigned spiders are also hanged from the ceiling. Many ornaments are very cute and these ornaments make us smile. Many students are spending busy school life with a lot of homework, but these ornaments really made us relax. We can use many good types of equipment and also, we can relax and have a good time in the SALC for the good decorations.

Challenge cycling 2006

During Hamakaze, there was a big program which is cycling from British Hills in Fukushima to KUIS in Chiba, it is about 260km. It’s the name of Challenge cycling 2006!! It is held in every year, but in this year all participants are girls, no guys. The application max is 11 people, and it finished in the first day when it started. It’s very amazing!!
On 25th October, the inaugural meeting was held in the president room. Mr. Akazawa, PE teachers, and all members are collected. They were given T-shirts which colors different with team, Orange, blue, and navy blue.

In the first day, they run 93 km. Ichinose sensei said to students, “The first day is little bit dangerous and very tough for you. Let’s challenge!! Have a good communication in a team!!” So, as teams they lined and have contacts a lot, like “Car coming” “Stopping.” They really enjoyed it and it past very soon.

On the second day, they had some muscular rheumatism because of yesterday’s work. However, at each check points on road, there were many supporters who were their family or relatives. They got energy from them and run 80km.

On the third day, they should pay attention for some busy road, because they already proceeded to Kashiwa-shi, Chiba. At the end, there were many audiences in KUIS, and they got a medal for each which was made by children.
Hamakaze is the big festival in KUIS, but it is not only having a shop or show something, but also time to try something irregular.
Why don’t you try Challenge Cycling 2007??

Lots of smiles in Hamakaze-festival

To all the readers of Nanikana blog, how was your weekend? To all of Kanda University students, did you go to Hamakaze-festival?

On 28th and 29th of October, there is Hamakaze-festival held at Kanda University of International Studies. This year was the 20th anniversary; the theme was “Full of Harmony”. As I saw in Hamakaze-festival, there are many people smiling, with enjoying Hamakaze-festival.

The first day of Hamakaze-festival on 28th of October, the weather is clearly sunshine covers Makuhari’s sky. In my club, environment club “Ecoism” was selling deposit drink, which is good to environment by recycling the bottle, sold two-third of drinks in the first day. There are no many organization sells drinks, so my club did it well in Hamakaze-festival. For “Ecoism”, this is the last year of participating Hamakaze-festival, so this year’s participate crowns all of the ecoism activities. Because of the sunny day in Hamakaze-festival, there are lots of people came to festival,

I also went to the group I interviewed. Many group rallied lots of customers to sale, or make customer to participate many events, there are plenty of effort. There is “Kyudo club” held cockshy game, “Jazz Session Department” held Jazz concert, “English Speaking Society” held English speaking contest and sale Yakisoba, Japanese fried noodle. As the university of international studies, there are shops making traditional food from Korea, Brazil, Thai and many other countries food was appear in Hamakaze-festival. It was good chance to get those traditional food or culture in Hamakaze-festival. Unfortunately, the second day’s weather was cloudy but many people came to festival, and many shops were sold out product that was happily scream for them.

There are many stage performance at central maidan, many music band played music and traditional dancing from all over the world. I was impressed that one band formed by Kanda university teacher and played music with full of smile. Teachers were Mr.Usui (He is teaching communication classes) and Mr.Kurosaki (teaching American politics, culture, history and so on). Vegetable Samba (Swing Gang Jazz laboratory and Ultra-Seven laboratory), and Jazzep (Swing Gang Jazz laboratory and Step-In dance club) made collaboration at stage.

In the point to think about global environment, there is club thinks about global issues. There are groups figure about landmine issue in all over the world, concerning Far East Asia nation, to focus on Yasukuni shrine problem in Far East Asia. Also, “Ecoism” did deposit drink sale to think about global environment issue too. To conceive of international issue, those presentations were priceless issues to think more, in Kanda University. In young generation, many people tries to escape from thinking those issues, but I think we have to know about what kind of problem in this world, to make more harmony in this planet.

I have not been to other university school festival, but the point of view is the Kanda University’s characteristic, there are to feel various countries by eat or know more the information, to think about global issues, but not to forget to enjoy school festival. Since this year is 20th anniversary of Hamakaze-festival, after the school festival finished, there is comedian live show held at gym. There are big names of comedian, “Up-Down”, “Garage-sale”, and Mr.Hosei Yamazaki. The live was end with big cheer of Kanda University students.

To sum up, there were many smiles in Hamakaze-festival. I also enjoyed as a one Kanda University student, also as an interviewer of Nanikana blog. To feel international culture, to eat various delicious foods, look at lots of exhibition, I am looking forward to next year’s Hamakaze-festival.
